Utopia by Jaume Plensa
PROJECT OVERVIEW
“Utopia”, by world-famous sculptor Jaume Plensa, at Frederik Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Toronto-based design and engineer firm Picco Group was instrumental in the planning, material sourcing and engineering of the sculpture, and reached out to me upon the completion of the project.
After spending time in the space at FMG over the course of a few days, you begin to appreciate the detail, complexity and beauty of a sculpture of this scale. Crafted from 400 tons of marble, it is truly a masterpiece sculpture. I wanted to accurately convey its scale, while still showing the incredible detail, so several lenses of different focal lengths were used, as well as shooting from various angles and proximities to the sculpture itself. The space is lit beautifully, so I was able to shoot entirely with natural/available light.
Working with Picco Group was a pleasure from the start, providing a clear objective, reasonable timeframe and proper budget. The Director of Communications at Frederik Meijer Gardens, along with staff and volunteers were wonderfully helpful, providing me unrestricted and after-hours access to the Gardens.
